Oh, WonderCon, my WonderCon

Well, I had a terrific time at WonderCon this weekend. WC has been a weird show for a while -- the last few years in Oakland had what looked like declining attendence, and tumbleweeds in the aisle, and the sale of the show to the San Diego ComiCon brought the show to San Francisco 3 years ago. The first two years at the Moscone can be charitbly descibed as marginal, where the show was dwarfed by the space around it, but 2005 was the year that broke big.

Friday's attendence looked solid (for a Friday), but the place was reasonably quiet. This was actually great because it gave me a good chance to get some business done, talk to people I pretty much only see at conventions and the like. More than anything else, it reminded me of a San Diego show from BEFORE the move into the new convention space -- those years when SD was THE place to be, yet you were still able to have half hour conversations with people while they manned thier booths. For me, as a person who would never ever SET UP at a show, yet has lots of comicy goodness and business to handle, that's a perfect as perfect could be.

Saturday, the place exploded. Probably because of Whedon and Kevin Smith, yes, but the convention floor itself was pretty steadily packed full of people wandering AND, it seemed, spending money. The show opened at 10 am, and at 1:30 that afternoon, there was STILL a steady 100-person long line to get in, which kind of blew me away. Especially since, by that point, it was thudding rain down. I was told that they actually ran out of badgeholders, and they had to take scissors to the exhibotr and guest badges in order to meet demand. It also seemed that they ran out of those as I saw someone with thier badge STAPLED to thier t-shirt!

There were a couple of minutes on early Saturday where it was nearly downright unpleasent to be on the convention floor -- the 10 minutes to walk 10 feet, because there are so many bodies in the place thang, and the for the love of god, turn on the air conditioners thang -- which I took as a good sign, actually. Business seemed to be solid and steady.

I was struck by how few publishers actually came -- DC, Image, Bongo and SLG were the only 4 traditional publishers set up (I very much missed Top Shelf and Oni, both of whom I wanted to discuss a few things with, and who were here last year) -- but I think if WC continues its growth curve, this has the potential to become an excellent show.

I learned a lot of interesting things, almost all of which were of the "just between me and you" variety, so you don't get to find out about any of them, but, in the end, I just had a terrific time.... something I haven't said about a comics convention in a decade or more. (Probably since the Pro/Con years at WC)

Ben went with me on Saturday morning, riding up on my shoulders most of the time. He charmed the hell out of both the ladies and the chaps, but he could only handle about 2 hours before his baby brain started to get overstimulated. The beauty of having a show in my home town was being able to take him all the way home, and still being able to make it back to the show within an hour.

Saturday night was the party at the new location for Comic Relief. Traditionally, Rory and I swap off years for store parties, and this year was technically our turn, but with his new venue, I was happy to cede it to CR. Helping out a fellow retailing brother is much more important than banging my own drum.

CR's new space is nothing short of impressive. Hell, given that they'd only had it for 18 days, and they had to prep WC, the quality of the presentation was nothing short of mind blowing. Comic Relief's staff and family should be amazingly proud of what they've been able to accomplish. Y'know, a lot of time me and Rory (and most other visible retailers, for that matter), get conflated with our stores. We'll say "Good Job, Rory" for anything that happens with CR -- but that does a great disservice to the people who actually MAKE the store what it is. CR has an excellent crew, and the victory of the new store is something they should all take individual pride in, and ownership of.

I can't say enough good things about the new space, however. It's huge, it's gi-normous; it's a big as a whale, and it's about to set sail! It is the kind of retail space that makes old men and young girls weep. It isn't there yet (only 18 days old), but I think that a year from now (especially if a store planner is brought in, modern signage installed, etc. etc.) this has the potential to be the single best comic book store in the WORLD. Seriously. I'm jealous.

So, that was my weekend. Now I'm just waiting for Lester to send me the final bits for ONOMATOPOEIA (Don't you love it when conventions and monthly deadlines collide?), so I can work all afternoon and evening. Hurray!

I might possibly squidge in with a few reviews on Monday (Here's a quick free one: PROMETHEA #32: I'm too old to read a comic that needs constanly turning and flipping, and has mostly yellow lettering on light blue backgrounds! It hurt my widdle head when I contemplated it. INCOMPLETE), but, honestly, I wouldn't expect it. I thinking I'm coming down with a cold, too.

A thought on ages...

Just got an email from John Jackson Miller (Editor at Krause's COMIC BUYERS GUIDE), which I thought I should share with you as well as my response. This is a little further afield of the usual content of this blog, but I thought that, possibly, it could generate an interesting thread on the comments section. Let's see, shall we?

JJ Wrote:

>>>Hi, Bri!

Craig Shutt and I are discussing the Bronze Age and its potential terminus, and we got to talking about Legends of the Dark Knight #1. He said you'd made an argument that there are enough problems "from a technical perspective" with using LODK as the divider that you prefer Spider-Man #1 from the following year -- but Craig couldn't recall the specifics.

We're doing another piece on this, so can you recap your case against LODK for me? My feeling has been that it marked the complete commoditization of the comic book and the beginning of the variant silliness, and that Spider-Man #1 is a difference only of degree. But I can be convinced, so if you can recall what you had to say, I'd appreciate it. I honestly don't remember much noteworthy from the interval between the two...

Best regards,

John Jackson Miller

Editorial Director, Krause Publications Comics & Games Division

<<<<<<<<<

My argument, as I recall it, was that the commoditization of the comic book was “accidental” in the case of LDK – the story goes that DC saw the order numbers for it, and freaked the fuck out, thinking there was NO WAY the DM could possibly absorb that many copies. The outer covers were added to ensure sell-THROUGH.

With McSpidey #1, multiple covers were used to increase sell-IN – which I think is the key factor in commoditization

Further, McSpidey #1 was (I think?) the first time that a book was created for a CREATOR, rather than the character – the selling point wasn’t so much that it was a new Spidey book – it was that it was TODD MCFARLANE’s new Spidey book.

It also, I think, marked the point where craft marked a decline – I still get a giggle out of “His powers? Advantageous!” whenever I think of it – because creator and synergy and commercial goals became more important than the actual craft of what was being produced. That 800-pound gorilla thing marked much of the next decade.

So that’s why I think McSpidey #1 is a MUCH better delineator than LDK #1 – it’s not just degree, it’s a wholly different thing.

Intellectually, I suppose I’d *really* argue that “Bronze age” runs from SUPERBOY SPECTACULAR (that’s the title, right?) – the first “DM exclusive” title, where publishers realized there was a retainable, non-fickle audience, and so they could start to do things FOR them – through to CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS #x (Maybe #1, but more probably #8), because that’s when the “tone” began to change. McSpidey #1 probably denotes the beginning of the “Dark Age”, going clear through…. Well, that’s harder to say with less than 10 years behind the terminus… something “NuMarvel”, perhaps? I don’t have a clear fix on it.

We’re definitely in a new “age” now – one where fun has begun to return, and commoditization has been “internalized” or, perhaps institutionalized might be a better word – it might have started, possibly, with ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #1, though 10 years from now I think that’s not going to “feel right”.

I tend to think “ages” begin with CONSCIOUS DECISIONS – which is why I’d put SHOWCASE #4 above the DETECTIVE with the first J’onn J’onzz as the true start of “Silver” books – but I don’t think they END cleanly or clearly at all – there’s a gap between gold and silver, and silver and bronze.

CE's January 2005 Top 100 by pieces

Just to prove (well, not really) that I'm working my little ass off, and that's why I'm not typing up reviews, here's the just completed 1/05 order placed at Diamond today, sorted out by quantity. Happy Sunday! (and tomorrow I HAVE to get the Feb subs written up, so if there are reviews, they'll be late in the day)

This is, of course, not a list of what WILL sell (If anyone has that crystal ball available, I'd like to see it!) for the month -- beyond sell-through issues, a huge chunk of this will not actually ship IN March; and, of course, reorders (and, potentially, order DEcreases on the Marvel titles) will all be added as intelligence continues to come in.

I'm definately interested in any outside-looking-in perspectives you may want to venture in the comments section.

Same thing again, just this time sorted by retail cover price. This changes the chart pretty drastically, and is, I think, the better indication of "what's selling" than pieces. "follow the money" Again, these placements will probably change -- for example, since it is limited to 1000 pieces, I don't think I'm going to get my full order on the $50 PROMETHEA poster thingy.

Comics Shipping 11/24 (+ a smidge more)

Being sick, alone, wouldn't have prevented reviews... but OF COURSE Diamond picks this month to deliver the PREVIEWS blackline THREE days late, so thoroughly bottlenecking the production of ONOMATOPOEIA, I'm STILL working on it at 9:30 at night, so I can print the damn thing tomorrow.... Anyway, Thanksgiving is coming, and just in case you thought it might, it isn't going to interfere with comics delivery at all. In fact, none of the rest of the holidays seasons do -- business as usual all Wednesdays. Comix Experience will, however, be closed on Thursday, Thanksgiving day, so don't plan on seeing us then...

After the New Years, I swear, I will be more dilignat about regular updating of the site. Really!

YUKO KONDO TOO FAT CANT FLY AND OTHER STORIES

Kibbles and Bits

Probably the last time you'll ever see a political commentary on this blog, but is anyone REALLY surprised that Bush won? I mean, look, Kerry wasn't running on anything other than being NotBush. NotBush is a nice position, to be sure, for some percentage of the country, but it's not a way to win.

The Democrats have to get thier shit together -- that's two elections in a row they've run a wonkish stiff who is defined by his opponent. Bush really should have been the most defeatable candidate ever, but the Demos blew it by running yet another woodman.

Or to put it another way, Kerry won here in San Francisco, like 85%/15%.... and I don't know a single person, not ONE (including myself) who voted for Kerry because they wanted to vote for Kerry -- they voted for Kerry because he was NotBush.

************

If Matt Brady is reading this, I beg and plead you to never ever EVER turn NEWSARAMA over to someone else again, like this week's "Joe Casey-a-rama". It sucked last year when you did it with Brian Wood, and it sucked this year just as hard. If I want to read puff pieces and softball interviews with the subject's friends, I can go and read WIZARD, y'know?

Seriously, let's at least _pretend_ it's an actual journalistic site, can we?

*************

Half a beat more of politics.

When I spoke to Rob today, who was devestated by the results (though, probably more from the DNA databse here in Cali than anything else), I said, "think of the up side -- at least you know we've only got 4 years to go. It's not like Dick Cheney will run for President in '08, and I don't think W has any credible successors"

Rob glumly said "They're going to change the constitution for Arnold."

Nah, I don't think so. I don't think we're that far gone yet.

Anyway, since when is 51% a "mandate"? The fuck? Shouldn't that be like 2/3 or better? Is it just me?

*************

I was hoping to have some "final" good news today because the judge in the Marvel Class Action suit held a hearing about it this morning, but he still hasn't signed the order. The expectation is he'll either sign it, or reject it in the next week or three (By Thanksgiving?), and, if he signs it, then 30 days for appeals (which no one, to my knowledge, will make... including Marvel), and then credits will be issued no later than 30 days after that. Presumably this is late December, early January. As a general thing, that sounds like a fine time table -- most stores can use the credits more AFTER the holidays than before them, but given how lonnnnnng this thing has stetched out, maybe it won't be until spring...

Anyway, back to reading comics -- hope to have SOME reviews from this week up for tomorrow....

Comics from 10/27

Been a busy week around here -- The Geoff Johns signing on Saturday (Thanks for coming, Geoff -- you are a gracious and garralous man, and everyone who showed had a wonderful time), then Ben's first Halloween on Sunday (well, OK, his second -- but he was barely a lump for #1), and the order form is due tomorrow, but I have to get it done today because tomorrow we have to process the new comics... So, I still haven't read a lot of last week's comics yet!

But I've read some, and there's a few things I definitely want to say, so let's get to what I do have....

Actually, first up, not a comic, but this week's ENTERPRISE. STAR TREK has been in a really really awful place since the end of DS9. VOYAGER stank on ice, and ENTERPRISE has been a jumbled mess. I stopped watching TREK as a weekly thing some time ago, because the quality was just too poor. But, maybe things are changing....

The old TREK production team of Berman & Braga have brought in a new show runner in Manny Coto, and since I'm always one to give a sentimental favorite a second chance (dude, I sell comics for a living!), I've started watching ENTERPRISE again.

Some of the same problems are still there -- the majority of the cast are ciphers, the show is horrifically crippled by continuity needs, the costume and designs are fairly uninspired -- but the watchability of the show has just skyrocketed because the show seems to be about STAR TREK again.

This week's episode has Brent (Data) Spiner guesting as Data's dad, Dr. Soong (hm, or maybe not, I just went to Startrek.com to check my spelling, and Data was built by Noonian Soong [hey, and Juliana O'Donnell Soong Tainer, to be exact!], while Spiner's character in ENTERPRISE is listed as "Arik Soong"), and there's related-to-Khan (who is, by the way, actually Kahn Noonian Singh.... confused yet?) eugenically-enhanced humans, and a visit to an Orion slave depot (Orions are the green folks, like the dancing chick in the first broadcast episode of STAR TREK: TOS), and there's punching and ethical quanderies and it just feels like STAR TREK again.

It's not *great* TREK, mind you, but it seems like it's solidly back in the "right" direction. I'm not sure if I'll be *tuning in* (I only watched this one because Bennett reminded me about it -- thankfully, they have 2 showings a week) each week, but I'm keeping at least one eye on TREK again. In SAVAGE CRITIC speak, I'd give it a (very!) low GOOD.

Now, to the comics.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #513: The rumor is JMS' deal with Marvel says that they can't rewrite a single word of any of his scripts. I sort of imagine this applies to his plots as well. This is a lousy deal, however. For Marvel, for the readers, and, yeah, I think, for JMS, too. See, I don't think there's a single writer out there, in any field, in any place, that can't benefit from editing. Particularly on what is, if you think about it, a licensed book where you are, at best, a steward for the future. Let me get this out of the way, too: I'm not what you would call a Spider-Man fan, especially. Unlike Jeff Lester, I don't have any particular affection for Gwen Stacey or the purity of her character, and her death wasn't a "defining moment" in my comics reading history.

I do, however, know crappy comics.

It starts out bad, really bad, with 5 pages of "comedy" so flat and uninvolving I couldn't beleive it. It's so out of place with the tone of the arc, it feels like a bit placed for the TP -- but I can't imagine it being anything less than horrifically jarring when encountered at page 100 (or whatever). Then we get to the meat of the story, where it seems they want it both ways: you're meant to respect the power of the original story, while at the same time knocking the legs out from under it. This simply doesn't work. "I...won't...fail...her...AGAIN!" has already been done like 47 times, and when it is in service of a story that completely undercuts the original character, you're not even rooting for Spidey to win this time.

Then there's the clunker of the plot points -- the police can't hear what's going on up on the bridge (though, um, I had thought for sure that there were parabolic mics that could listen in at 1 mile+), yet they're able to hit the girl (with, er, pistols?) no problem from the distance. That's just absurd.

I'll reserve judgment on the last panel because there's the obvious way it's going to go, and the "whoa, surprised me!" way, and why make assumptions.

Blech, I hated almost every page of this. CRAP.

AUTHORITY REVOLUTION #1: The AUthority's time is up. They were of a moment. And they perfectly captured that moment. But now that moment is the past, and, even with a reasonably strong premise, like this has, even with a good creative team, like this has, the whole thing really feels like fucking corpses. Look, on a craft basis, on a storytelling basis, this is just fine. But, at the end of the day, I've found I simply don't care any longer. EH.

BATMAN #633

CATWOMAN #36: And, see, this is why I didn't give ASM #513 PICK OF THE WEAK status. Because it clearly has to go to the horrific conclusion of "War Games". Is anyone up there thinking? I mean, seriously. Batman, as they've portrayed him lately, is a meglomanical control freak with obsessive compulsive tendencies who surrounds himself with broken personalities who just reinforce his worst tendencies. And lots and lots of innocent people die because of it. There's no way that the superhero community would let this stand, no way the public would support these people any longer, no way, in fact, the supporting cast as written could possibly keep going along with this. Jim Gordon? Leslie Thompson? Alfred? One of these people WOULD stand up and say "You completely fucked up, you have to make this right, change your game, or we're going public with all of this bullshit"

Story elements alone bring the whole Bat-mythos crashing down. Look, Black Mask proclaims he's attacking the "batcave". The building is protected by gas and lasers (!) and the entire assault is live over-the-air. Who do they find at the middle of it all, surrounded by banks of computers? Little Barbara Gordon who, huh, just happens to have red hair like Batgirl, whom never was seen again after Babs got shot by the Joker. You can't tell me, that in a world where Presedential politics turn on 20-year old events being exhaustively unearthered, that some reporter somewhere isn't going to figure this all out in like 90 seconds?

Then we have the emotional core of the story, and Batman's deathbed scene with Spoiler -- at no point does Bruce take the slightest amount of responsability for any of his actions... actions which DIRECTLY led to the death of this little girl (not to mention Orpheus -- no one seems to care there -- and notice the other dead person is the black guy...). Look, this isn't like Jason's death. This was Bruce's FAULT. HE did this. And there's nothing there, no heart, no remorse, nothing.

ANd the story ends with evil winning. Black Mask? (The most thoroughly c-list of Batma's Rogues Gallery, to be sure) He tortured and murdered a little girl, and he's rewarded with exactly what he wanted -- rulership of Gotham's gangs. Hooray!

You know what this really was? This was "Maximum Clonage" for Batman.

CRAP. And the PICK OF THE WEAK.

DAREDEVIL #66: I liked the story quite a bit, and I liked the idea behind the use of B&W to seperate the eras. On the other hand, the cheap bastard part of me said, "but if half of it was B&W why were we paying color prices?" Still, GOOD.

DOOM PATROL #5: Heh, Robot Wars. That John Byrne, 3 years beihnd the zeitgeist! Still, dopey and unobjectionable, I'll go with an EH.

FLASH #215: Maybe Jeff Lester will pop his head in and give his well-reasoned counter that he laid out on Friday at the store, but I didn't think this issue worked. Mostly for reasons of timing. Even though the timing was to tie-in to IDENTITY CRISIS, I think the story would have worked a whole lot better if ithad come 6 months before or 6 months after IC. I understand the intended counter-point this was intended to provoke, but it's not a seemless continuity implant. See, while I don't like it, I can accept that, in the aftermath of Zoom killing Iris, Barry made a singular big mistake with Dr. Light. That doesn;t strain my vision of continuity. I have a harder time with "and, by the way, I did it again" even if his motivations were more... altrustic, I guess. ANd I have the hardest time beleiving that the Top was then a hero and visible presence in Central City, because we've never ever heard of that before. Then when you add the whole big psychic powers and body swapping things in, which I only sorta remember being brought up once in the past (note: I really and truly miss editorial notes [see: Flash (v1) #172]) but seems like a whole lot more to spin off the character (ow, sorry) than he was built to handle. So my "Wait...what?" shield went right up. Other than that, this was OK.

GREEN LANTERN REBIRTH #1: If you're not a big GL history/fan/buff, I'm not sure if a lot of this wouldn't just slide right off of you. However, when you know your GL, this was a love letter. PLus the art was GREAT, with yummy colors. Me likee long time. EXCELLENT.

JLA #107: Kurt Busiek's first DC wwork was the little-remembered RED TORNADO mini-series. In which Reddy fought... the Construct. So, it was cute to see him come full circle in here. I always thought that, at least theoretically, the Construct was a neat concept. Especially now with the common use of cell phones and the internet. Not like back when he was created in the 70s -- now the idea of the internet getting sentience seems almost inevitible, y'know? Anyway, so that was nice, but otherwise, I was kinda bored. Not much happens. Mostly Wally just pacing aorund the Watchtower. I have higher hopes for next issue, where the Crime Syndicate actually appears! For now, though, EH.

OUTSIDERS #17: Seeing John Walsh's face on the cover somehow made me flashback to that issue of SUPERMAN'S PAL, JIMMY OLSEN with Don Rickles on the cover. That's all I wanted to say. OK

PLANETARY #21: Though PLANETARY has been less obvious in doing the theme issues lately (the first half-dozen being so obviously, "this is the giant monster one", "this is the hong knog revenge film one" and so on), "this is the Alan Moore one." In fact, no less than three people specifically asked about the new PROMETHEA when they saw and mistook this for that. Points off for no forward movement in the plot, but, still VERY GOOD.

SOLO #1: Mark Chiarello has done what I had thought was impossible up to now: he's figured out a way to make an anthology book work for an American audience. Really fucking clever way, too -- make the commonality a CREATOR, in this case, Tim Sale. Sale illustrates every story, and writes, to excellent effect, mind you, two of them. Stories range in tone and genre, but, in every case, this is, I think, some of the best writing we've seen from co-conspiritors Azzarello, Loeb, Shutz, and Cooke. Every story was a little gem, and they all tied together beautifully by Sale's art, and I have to give this an unqualified EXCELLENT as well as the PICK OF THE WEEK.

STRANGE #2: Wong's a hand specialist? Buh? This is taking an awful long time to do what Stan and Ditko did in, what, 2 pages? And, like WARLOCK, it's making enough changes to the "real" story that it feels very out of step with how Marvel has always run (Every story "happened" -- unlike DC where's theres only comparatively recently been given ANY thought to how all the comics fit together), and makes me feel kinda eeky. "Untold tales" are cool, but changing story details just, y'know, 'cuz has never been the Marvel way. OK

SUPERMAN #210: One thing out of the way, first. Batman says "Jesus" here and he's using it as a swear. I am astonished that passed editorial, and it's so far out of character for more reasons than I even want to list. It looks like the cover was drawn months before the script for the issue came in. This whole thing is just a mess. I can't attach any revelence to the events or the situations because they're not only being handled obliquely, but also because everyone seems to be spouting lines that come from plot needs rather than character motivation. This is a muddled jumbled mess, and most of all, it's not ANY FUN AT ALL. Superman comics are SUPPOSED to be fun, people! AWFUL.

WE 3 #2: Holy crap that was good. EXCELLENT.

WOLVERINE #21: Like Lester observed, no matter what I think of it, we did, at least, get to see Wolverine fuck a shark. My defensive sheilds went up when Fury had that line about loving his job because he see shit that amazes him... like a 747 landing. OK, sure, it's Airforce One, and sure it's on the helicarrier, but I can't imagine Nick Fury being amazed or surprised by that at all. Plus, and Wolvie can kill scores (hundreds? Thousands? Seemed like a lot) of America's best agents, but he can't smoke any longer? Is it just me? There's no way this story can end well, so just turn off the ol' brain and enjoy the ride. EH.

On to the BOOK OF THE WEEK. There's a LOT of solid choices this week, and my first pass looked like this:

COMPLETE PEANUTS VOL 2 1953-1954 HC

CRYPTO ZOO TP

FABLES VOL 4 MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS TP

FRED THE CLOWN GN

MARVEL VISIONARIES JACK KIRBYVOL 1 HC

SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATER VOL 2THE FACE AND THE BRUTE

SUPERMAN BIRTHRIGHT HC

SWAMP THING REGENESIS TP

That's a lot to even try and write about in the time I have left (still have to do the order form today!), so I'm going to say you should ask your LCS for each and every one of those books because they're all chocked full of goodness, but the one single book I would buy above the others... well it might be SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE because I want DC to do vol 3 & 4 & 5 and so on when the stories get GREAT, but I think I have to go with the other "encourage DC to keep going" book, and that's SWAMP THING (v7) REGENESIS, as Rick Veitch follows Alan Moore's run on the book, and I think matches that run for verve and idea. The reason we want to encourage DC, of course, is that Veitch's run originally was aborted when Swamp Thing was going to meet Christ, as he travelled backwards through time. (Swampy, not JC, that is) -- rumor has it that DC was negotiating with Veitch (or the other way around) about maybe finishing the story now. If so, then we really really want vol 8, so buy Regenesis. There's not many people who have successfully followed Alan Moore, that alone should tell you how good this is.

Times up, time to post and get back to paperwork....

Two Quick Public Service Announcements

PSA Numero Uno: I'm sure most of you caught the announcement that Geoff Johns is going to be signing at CE from 4 to 7 on Saturday Octobert 30th. But some of you may missed it, so there it is. We hope you can make it. PSA Numero Two-o: If I was Hibbs I would have posted the shipping list doo-da that he does, but I'm not--I can only link to the Diamond site's if you're curious. But Rob Bennett informs me that we did not get in Superman/Batman #12 this week. He said that the East Coast did, the West Coast did not for quick brown reasons that jumped over the slow, lazy dog of my head. Just a head's up for those of you breathlessly anticipating how much sillier Jeph Loeb was going to twist a storyline about Supergirl wearing a slutty outfit and beating our heroes to pudding in apparent obeisance to Darkseid (I freely admit to counting myself in that crowd).

I have a batch of new comics here. Give me some time and I'll let you know what I think.

Dollar figures for 10/04

Same thing, except this time I have it sorted by DOLLARS rather than UNITS This becomes a VERY different list! Witness the power of the book!

Order figures for 10/04

I'm not sure if this is of any interest to anyone but me, but since it only takes about 1 minute to generate a list like this, and I'm desperately trying to avoid typing up the subs (despite me having to have it finished by tomorrow), I thought I'd share what Comix Experience's INTIAL ORDERS looked like for the month of October. These numbers can change dramatically by the time books ship (somethings don't ship on time, other things will get reordered, and there's always the chance that Marvel orders will be cut before the Final Order Cutoff), but here's what I think I'll be selling come October... Only doing the Top 50 here, but, as you can see, it's still very different than the "general market"

Let me know if this is at all interesting -- voting will count towards I ever do it again

Marc-Oliver addresses the numbers behind Fallen Angel, and makes some points that I probably should have made more succinctly. (and, for the record, no I don't think PAD and I are "fighting" or anything -- I think this has been both a civil and productive discussion)

It's Monday, and I still have to do this week's invoicing, and finish the sub form, so, thanks to the flurry of message board posting this weekend, I don't think there will be more reviews until Wednesday with the next cycle of books. Sowwy.

In response to Peter David

(in response to http://peterdavid.malibulist.com/archives/001891.html) Dear Peter,

I don’t really know the finer protocols of blogging yet, so I’m sending a copy of this in e-mail to you as well as putting it up on my blog. (http://www.comixexperience.com/savblog/savblog.html) It just seemed presumptuous to assume you’re reading mine, or that the “greater blogosphere” will somehow notify you. And I didn’t want to respond in the “comments” section since you “called me out” on the front page, nor just send you a link.

In the interest of clarity, feel free to run this in full or part on your site (http://peterdavid.malibulist.com/) (I know you know that, I’m only talking like this because it’s bloggy and in public.) if you choose to respond.

Right, so, I’m definitely not the smartest retailer in the country – I’d probably go with Jim Hanley on that particular point – I’m just the loudest.

I like the Direct Market system – I think it’s incredibly efficient in what it does well, and I think it is reasonably barrier-free to entry (though not, necessarily success – which is a different beast) for the newcomer, at least when compared to other artistic forms.

It also has a large number of semi-professionals in business (on all sides) because of that relative barrier-free nature.

So if you tell me that there are stores out there that are turning down legitimate preorders, I’ll shake my head and say “Wow, sounds dumb,” but I’m not going to doubt you. However, I strongly believe that the number of “good” stores HAS to be high if only because they’re still in business, and comics are unforgiving to idiots.

Now, let me get the “bad part” out of the way. I carry FALLEN ANGEL, and I do so beyond subs. I don’t believe I have sold out of more than 1 of the 14 released issues. And our sales have steadily eroded until they are down to, for the last 5 issues, 1 copy preordered by a sub, and 1 rack copy sold. I’m still ordering 3 copies, mind you, even though I have pretty good proof that last copy is not selling and is a waste of my $1.13. That’s the kind of store I try to be. We ordered 1 copy of the trade. Haven’t sold it.

You, I think, know the problems as well as I do – the book was misbranded from the get go by being part of the “bad girl” line or whatever it was called, I’ve already forgotten. The book also didn’t, tonally, fit the DC bullet, and you couldn’t get a Vertigo branding. Retailers (AND CONSUMERS) make their snap judgments and often stick to them despite contrary evidence. FALLEN ANGEL is neither fish, nor fowl. And that’s not a problem you’re going to be able to overcome in most circumstances.

I think trying to move the trades is probably a fine idea – many series find life in trade and if you can increase the velocity of trade sales, I’m sure DC will take note.

What I need to ask you is why you don’t have a list of “Peter David Friendly” stores? You’ve certainly done retailer write-ins and things in BID, so you should have had a good database to work from without even doing any real research. Why aren’t you, say, on the Comic Book Industry Alliance (www.thecbia.com) forum, talking directly to a large number of the “better” (ugh, smarmy sounding!) retailers? I think announcing this kind of plan on the internet like this will probably get a fairly anemic response just because most stores probably aren’t checking your website (much much less check mine, though!)

Look, there’s only 3500 stores, and 90% of your business is going to come from 10% of them, so you (and every creator, mind you) should be proactively figuring out who “their” stores are. And working with them, from the before the launch, to maximize their sales.

That’s what you have to do on non-traditional books, because retailers are skittish, and justifiably so if they don’t clearly understand WHO they’re going to sell the book to.

Bob Wayne will probably call me to yell for suggesting this in public, but what you really need to do is some targeted shipping. Diamond, for a fee, can ship a, or multiple, promotional copies to, say, all stores that ordered 2 or less copies of the latest issue, but did order [whatever you think you should be comparable in audience to], that kind of thing. Costs money, of course, to do that, but that’s really the only way to establish to the disinterested retailer that there are potential sales he or she is losing.

Personally, I don’t think it would work – I think the market’s mind is pretty well cemented on FALLEN ANGEL, and that your only real chance is to reposition the book. Rename it, possibly, rather than the “season 2” route – get some buzz going from BEFORE the launch, let “your” retailers directly know what the book is and who to sell it to, and what’s going on.

I would particularly caution against seeing emails like you printed as being directly indicative of an actual lost sale. For example, the guy on vacation – he didn’t see them, so he’s writing to let you know... but he’s not a customer for Modesto. There may not BE a customer in Modesto. I mean, fiscally, I should have cut my “extra” rack copy of FALLEN ANGEL months ago. Maybe the stores in Modesto have hit that point as well and made the other choice. I don’t know, and while I can see why you, as a creator might be suspicious, let’s have a little innocent before proven guilty, yes?

There’s also, might I add, a goddamn lot of comics being published today – we’re a “full line” store, but I don’t stock but maybe half of the comics listed in PREVIEWS. It’s not POSSIBLE to carry 100% of them and do it well. I don’t even think it’s possible to carry all of that, and do it badly!

I guess what I’m asking is, in the face of hundreds of new choices each month, and thousands of SKUs in backstock, can you ACTUALLY FAULT a retailer who decides that he doesn’t perceive an audience for one book or another? Especially when even you will admit Mistakes Were Made with the Launch?

I hope that’s some food for thought.

FANGASM!!!!

(That title's just for Jeff Lester) I woke up late, so you probably already know that the new Tilting at Windmills is up at Newsarama.

I generally don't wade in to Newsarama threads, so post here, if you are scared of them, too.

Mm, and Augie? Once is an accident, twice is avoidable, week after week after week is a pattern.

(More comic reviews later tonight, I hope -- most everything is read)

The Bendis Batman / Daredevil thing

Only because BMB asked that retailers pester Levitz over this thing, here's one retailer's 2 cents. Putting aside the whole "DC sucks! It's just like the old days with Stan! Except I talk about penises!" trip that Quesada and Jemas were on (and, see, actions have consequences -- does no one remember the adage of being nice on your way up because you get to meet all of those people again on your way back down?), I don't think there's a lot of value in DC getting in bed with Marvel as long as Marvel's current publishing policies are as they are.

Remember AVENGERS/ JLA? Marvel printed #1 and 3. Limited to initial orders only. Sold out upon release. Took no responsibility whatsoever.

DC printed #2 & 4. Had copies available for reorder. Still do, in fact. When #4 ran late, DC applied their returnable policy for mini-series and took BOTH #2 and #4 returnable.

I mean, game set and match.

Plus, let's not forget that they've done it before. Try 1997 and 2000?
