Wait, What? Ep. 45: It Will Be Brought.

Photobucket And so without further delay, Graeme and I are back with another podcast episode designed to amuse and bemuse.  ("Design" might be a little too strong a word, though.)  In this ep., we discuss our preparations (both mental and physical) for seeing Green Lantern: The Movie, as well as the Marvel event from 1989 Atlantis Attacks; Mark Gruenwald's legacy on Captain America; Jack Kirby, Neil Gaiman, the Berganza/Didio interview tour, Avenging Spider-Man, the perfect setting for Tron 3, SDCC, and more.   You can find it on iTunes or listen to it here:

Wait, What? Ep. 45: It Will Be Brought.

Finally, we hope you enjoy Graeme's dramatic interpretation of a beloved comic book character, which I've excerpted below in the hopes it will make its way into a fan edit of a certain franchise or two:

I\'d advise you to listen to the podcast first before listening to this, but we\'re all adults here, right?

As always, thanks for listening!

Wait, What? Ep. 44: Our Man in Havana

Photobucket Yes, it's episode 44 of the podcast but it's also a first for Graeme and me -- as in, our first interview. As you might infer from the graphic above, there were some minor technical difficulties to be had, but we didn't let that stop us from doing the interview with....Mr. Brian Hibbs! It's something we've been meaning to do for a long time, and it seems like news of the DC reboot was the "best" time to do it.

This was recorded on Thursday, June 9, so I guess we had just about all the info from DC at that point.  Mr. Hibbs walks us through his brave new world of accountability, tiered discounts, and the challenges facing comic book retailers in the coming months.  It should be floating around on iTunes already, and you can also listen to it right here:

Wait, What? Ep. 44: Our Man in Havana

We hope you enjoy it, and definitely give us some feedback below if you'd like!

Wait, What? Ep. 43: The Men from W.A.F.F.L.E.

Photobucket Yes, here we are in "deep cover," doing our best to pose as the type of fiends who would cause all kinds of trouble to the Doom Patrol.  Graeme McMillan and I are the men from W.A.F.F.L.E.!

(If the Waffle Window wants to make us official mascots, we'd bothBE  honored and thrilled....)

But since pictures are only worth a thousand words, and we have at least ten times that to offer you every week, here's Wait What, Ep. 43 for you -- everything you'd want to know about our takes on DC's September reboot, with perhaps an Alan Moore imitation or two thrown in.  It's an hour and fifty minutes of end of days frivolity, available to you on iTunes or right here, more or less right now:

Wait, What? Ep. 43: The Men From W.A.F.F.L.E.

Thanks for listening and, as always, we hope you enjoy!

Wait, What? Ep. 42: Cry for Just Us

Photobucket Finally! Because Graeme demanded it--Wait, What? Ep. 42 is out and in it, Mr. McMillan and myself talk our changing perceptions of the our the Green Lantern and X-Men: First Class movies, review Batwoman: Elegy; Wolverine: Insane in the Brain; Superman: The Black Ring; Mr. Wonderful by Dan Clowes, centennial issues, and, yup, a reconsideration of Cry For Justice. It's an hour and forty minutes of verbal nerd-fu, delivered in audio Shawscope

You can find it on iTunes, or on the 'cast's RSS feed, or you are hereby invited to listen to it here and now:

Wait, What? Ep. 42: Cry for Just Us

As we mention, there's going to be a bit of a gap between this episode and the next as I'm taking a brief vacation to Portland, where I will have the pleasure of hanging out and talking with Graeme sans Skype and sketchy wi-fi connection, but we hope you remember to tune in for us in a fortnight or so...

We hope you enjoy and thanks for listening!

Wait, What? Ep. 41: Not Even Us

wait, what? podcast from palinode on Vimeo.

I could be a little better at this--although Graeme and I were delighted when Adam P. Knave (@adampknave) and his chum Palinode (@Palinode) took a second to set an excerpt or two of our podcast to video, I forgot to link on it here. If you've ever wished to see Graeme and I as our platonic ideals (inverted butternut squashes), this would be the video for you.

Or, if you would prefer to keep us two voices in your ear, feel free to listen to Wait, What? Ep. 41, now available for your audio perusal. In it, G and I discuss the conclusion to the Flash series, Flashpoint #1 and its possible ramifications, Thor: The Motion Picture, X-Men: First Class and a ton of other stuff. It's on iTunes, it's in the podcast's RSS feed, and it's also here, if that's the kind of thing that floats your boat:

Wait, What?, Ep. 41: Not Even Us

We hope it's to your likingm and thanks for listening!

Wait, What? Ep. 40.2: Earth JKGM

Photobucket It's the wrap up of Episode 40, with Graeme and myself answering questions from listeners on Twitter. (Really good questions, I should add--the kind of questions you want to get when you're fully rested and you have the breadth of your comic knowledge at the tip of your fingers. Sadly, I was kind of stressed and I'd just eaten a Twix PB bar and the comics seemed so very...so very far away...) Our least favorite characters, our favorite writers or artists not getting any work, truncated runs we wish had been properly completed, and much more...all wedged in to a hair more than an hour.

Savvy types who have us on iTunes and those following the RSS feed can grab this fine bit o' podcasting now. Or you can listen to it right here:

Wait, What?, Ep. 40.2: Earth JKGM

We hope you enjoy it, and (as always) thanks for listening!

Wait, What? Ep. 40.1: Anniversary Babies

Photobucket Okay, I admit it: the title doesn't really fit with anything Graeme and I mention in this first installment of our 40th podcast. However it is appropriate to when this post goes live--the Tenth Anniversary of the Savage Critic website. It's kind of a big deal for me as I've been here since the site went live (although with much more distance for the last five years or so) and I hope to be here for a while longer yet. I could go on about my feelings for some length--being raised a Spider-Man, I'm pretty much guaranteed to be able to fill one to two pages with internal monologue (though I never did get the hang of that web-swinging thing)--but I'll be merciful and spare you all.

Instead, lemme just say that I did bust the proverbial hump to get this first installment edited and uploaded in time for the big day and we hope you enjoy--in it, Graeme and I talk Time Masters: Vanishing Point and the work of Dan Jurgens; the publicity and marketing of Flashpoint #1, how the heck something like Spider-Island comes about, and I use an extremely inappropriate metaphor to describe Avengers 12.1 (actually, two extremely inappropriate metaphors now that I think of it). Should be available on iTunes by now, as well as the RSS feed for the podcasts, *and* you can listen to it right here, right now:

Wait, What?, Ep. 40.1: Anniversary Babies

We hope you enjoy, and thanks for listening! Crack open a long box in celebration of the anniversary, will you?

Wait, What? Ep. 39.2: Hipster Cap

Photobucket

Hey, can I take a moment and mention that you guys are awesome?  (If this was happening in real life and you were Hibbs, you would say, "No.")  As you'll discover from listening to this ep., I read and quite dug the trade of Wolverine: Insane in the Brain, a page of which you can see above, "courtesy" of IGN, and I definitely owe that to listener/commenter Cory Nalder who mentioned it back in August of '10 in a way that made me think I would enjoy it.  He was totally right.

That and recent reviews on iTunes from Anthony Casaldi and Dasbender on iTunes, as well as the discussions that pop up on our comments, just make me really aware how lucky Graeme and I are to have a place for our podcast, and a group of like-minded people that appreciate it and can help expand our (by which I very much mean "my") horizons.  Thank you.

So. Ahem.  Yes, and but so here's the conclusion of Wait, What? Episode 39 for you, wherein Graeme and myself talk Simonson's Thor Omnibus, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty; Wolverne: Insane in the Brain trade paperback by Jason Aaron, Yanick Paquette, and C.P. Smith; Moon Knight #1 by Bendis and Maleev, Thor #1 by Matt Fraction and Oliver Coipel, the aftermaths of Brightest Day and Justice League: Generation Lost....and our speculation about Flashpoint (I wasn't quite nerdy enough to put this underneath our discussion, but I admit to being nerdy enough to seriously think about it). All in under an hour.

Perhaps you've already downloaded via iTunes. If not, why not listen to it here and now?

Wait, What?, Ep. 39.2: Hipster Cap

As always, we hope you enjoy, and thanks for listening!

Wait, What? Ep. 39.1: Where Jeff Yells at Graeme in Spanish

Photobucket Hello, all!

I hate to again be god-damnably brief, but there are many, many things on the plate (including a wife who is waiting for me so we can watch the second ep. of Life on Mars (U.K. version, natch)) and I cannot tarry. But I do have a big heaping handful of Wait, What for you, in which MC Mc and myself talk Fear Itself #2 and expectations for crossover events, a few select movie trailers, the importance of capitalism and/or water, and more (a little bit more). Just a hair over an hour, with a second installment later this week.

Savvy listeners have probably already downloaded this installment via iTunes or the RSS feed, but you are certainly welcome to listen at your leisure here:

Wait, What?, Ep. 39.1: Where Jeff Yells at Graeme in Spanish

As the Asgardian-types say: enjoy!

Wait, What? Ep. 38: The Day That Comes Afterwards

Photobucket Why yes, I did quote Rebecca Black's Friday and reprint one of the worst things Rob Liefeld's ever done (well, or pretended to do, really).  It is the Bizarro Wait, What?, filled with nothing but the desire to inflict pain rather than love.

Although to be fair, we do talk about Shrink, as well as Russel T. Davies's The Writer's Tale, Dave McKean's Celluloid, Action Comics #900, Casanova, Brightest Day, the idea of Black Avengers, and the appeal of superheroes.  Honestly, as Bizarros, we probably could've done worse.

It's available now on iTunes (probably), and you can also listen to it here:

Wait, What?, Ep. 38: The Day That Comes Afterwards

We hope you enjoy and, as always, thanks for listening! (Man, I'd make the worst Bizarro ever....)

Wait, What? Ep. 37: Scrapper Troopers

Photobucket Hello, everyone. After some delay, I'm happy to report Wait, What? Ep. 37 is here for you. Despite a giant laser sword cutting my home planet in half, I was able to persevere and get this (and Ep. 38) put together for you.  It is the hope of Graeme and myself that you enjoy them.

First, Ep. 37.  While not short (ninety five minutes or so), it's actually surprisingly full-bodied on flavor, as Graeme and I talk about our expectations for Chester Brown's Paying for It and Dave McKean's Celluloid, as well as review Gingerbread Girl by Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover, FF #1, Fear Itself, Axe Cop Bad Guy Earth #2, One Piece, Secret Avengers and a title you probably haven't heard of that we've never discussed before:  Final Crisis.

Oh, and for those of you who like it when Graeme and I bicker, we've do some world class scrappin' over Superman #710, oh my yes.

This feast of the audible should be available on iTunes by the time you read this, but it is also available for you here:

Wait, What?, Ep. 37: Scrapper Troopers

We hope you enjoy and thanks for listening!

Wait, What? Ep. 36: Sexy Sinestro

Photobucket Hello, friends. I almost managed to screw the pooch on this deadline too, but things came together, I was able to find a little patch of editing and uploading time, and...here we are. Sexy Sinestro Time!

So, as I mention in my intro, WW? 36 is our almost-didn't-happen shortcast which goes to prove that even when Graeme and I are both exhausted and overworked and have sworn that we're not going to talk comics, we can and will still have something to say about comics. Consequently, however, we media res the hell out of this one, cutting in very late on our discussion and cutting out kinda early.  (It's like good screenwriting advice as applied to podcasts!  Next up,  Graeme and I will start discussing comics but by the third act, comics will be discussing us!  Admittedly, my screenwriting knowledge is shaky, but apparently the perfect screenplay is structured like a Yakov Smirnoff joke.)

Still--we manage to talk DC's Doomsday event, Dan DiDio's Outsiders, Fear Itself, Ultimate Fallout, and Green Lantern: Secret Origin wherein we do indeed discuss--all too terribly briefly--Sexy Sinestro.

Those inclined should be able to find it on iTunes (hopefully by the time this post goes live) or you can listen to it here:

Wait, What, Ep. 36: Sexy Sinestro

As always, we hope you enjoy it--and thanks for listening!

Wait, What? Ep. 35: Useful Detritus, Somehow

Photobucket Yeah, ran a little late for reasons about which I had very little control over...but hope you all are doing okay?

It's Ep. 35, and Graeme and I talk Fear Itself #1, re-examine Fraction and Ferry's Thor, talk Bakuman Vol. 4 and Onion Head Monster: Catastrophic, and answer questions posed to us on Twitter. It may sound a little skimpy on content, but that's just because I'm not doing it justice at all: it's 90+ minutes of red-hot (mostly) comics talk. Should be available on iTunes by the time this goes live, and you can also listen to it right here:

Wait, What, Ep. 34: Useful Detritus, Somehow

As always, thanks for listening--and special thanks to Dasbender and everyone else who took a second to give us a review on ITunes. It's always appreciated.

Wait, What? Ep. 34: Fools Before The Fools'

Photobucket Whew.

Just barely made it in under the wire--kinda ironic, considering I had the week off.  And yet as sometimes happens when you take a vacation during a big comics convention, you can spend almost as much time recovering as you do shuffling through longboxes and whatnot.  (More, obviously, in my case.)

In any event, here's Wait, What? Ep. 34 for you: almost ninety minutes of comic book flava recorded by Graeme and myself on the day before Wondercon.  We talk Moyasimon: Tales of Agriculture, Finder: Voice, Thor, Butcher Baker #1, Wonder Woman, Jimmy Olsen #1, and Marc Guggenheim's recent Justice Society of America.  Really, it was worth the wait (for those of you waiting, anyway.)

By the time you read this, it should (maybe?) be on iTunes.  You can also listen to it right now and right here:

Wait, What, Ep. 34: Fools Before The Fools\'

Oh, and speaking of iTunes--for those of you who listen to us and enjoy us and haven't given us a review on iTunes?  If you wouldn't mind taking a second to do so, I'd appreciate it.  I'd like as many people to be able to find and try the podcast as possible, and I think a recent review always makes for a good impression, you know?  Just a totally optional thing, if you feel like doing it...

Anyway, we hope you enjoy and, as always, thanks for listening!

Wait, What? Ep. 33: Your Little Glowing Friend

Photobucket So here we are with Episode 33 of Wait, What?, ready for your listening pleasure.  We took George's comment to heart and did our best to give you a podcast of only the stuff we're positive about.  Admittedly, we don't entirely succeed 100%--sorry, Fear Itself: Book of The Skull--but we  tried very hard.  Consequently, you get to hear Graeme and I wax rhapsodic about Classic G.I. Joe, the Captain America Jack Kirby Omnibus, Bakuman, Bucko, and more.  Or, well, hmm.  Actually maybe that is it, though there is some other stuff in there that's not really book reviewing though not much--we kept things to a very manageable just-over-an-hour.

It should be on iTunes by now if I've done everything right.  Or, should you feel compelled, you can listen to it here:

Wait, What? Ep. 33: Your Little Glowing Friend

We hope you enjoy and thanks for listening!

Wait, What? Ep. 32.2: It Can Destroy The World.

Photobucket As much as I wanted a cover of the Captain America Jack Kirby Omnibus here, I couldn't find one that really grabbed me (or didn't seem kinda small, which is exactly the opposite of the effect when you see the friggin' thing) and so here is the cover of the third cover of Sean Chiki's Wunderkammer, which we discuss herein:

Wait, What? Ep. 32.2: It Can Destroy The World.

It's available on Itunes and here, and perhaps floating about on some semi-cosmic curl of subconsciousness. In it, we also discuss the upcoming teams on Punisher and Daredevil, Stokoe's Won Ton Soup, X-Force #5, and others.

As always, we hope you enjoy, and thanks for listening!

Wait, What? Ep. 32.1: (Jason) Aaron & Ahmed

Photobucket So I did my best to wait until Hibbs posted the shipping list, but I can just tell that no matter when I set this thing to post, he's going to write something that will take up the whole homepage five minutes later...which is certainly his prerogative, and typically preferred.

But I did want to tell you that, should you be interested, the first part of Episode 32 is up on iTunes and in it Graeme and I talk Punisher Max #11, Aaron & Ahmed, Wolverine #6, the last ten or so issues of Captain America, James Robinson's two Jimmy Olsen Specials from the other year, and a bunch of other stuff. Should you choose, you can listen to it here:

Wait, What? Ep. 32.1: (Jason) Aaron and Ahmed

Next installment should be up in a day or so and, as always, we hope you enjoy!

Wait, What? Ep. 31: Epic Runs of Non-Epicness

Photobucket I'll spare you the epic amounts of bitching I usually unleash around this time, the end/start/whatever-the-hell-it-is of Daylight Savings Time that always fucks me up for at least a few days and sometimes as much as a week. Suffice it to say, if you've ever heard Paul F. Tompkins' terrific bit mocking people who over-react to DST, and wander about in a daze saying things like, "Who--who's President? What day is this? Have I grown a long, woolly beard?", you will know he is making fun of people like me. Even as I laughed with recognition at the routine and promised to change, I apparently cannot: it took a taser to get me out of bed this morning.

Anyway, enough about that! Let's talk about Wait, What? Episode 31! Martian Manhunter! Justice League Detroit! Takio! Michael Fleisher's run on Ghost Rider! John Romita, Jr.! L'il Punisher! It's got just about everything you could want--more or less--in just as much time in which you would want it--provided you would want it in about 90 minutes.

It should be on Itunes! (Alternately? It is on Itunes!) And you can listen to it here, if that is the sort of thing you like to do:

Wait, What? Ep. 31: Epic Runs of Non-Epicness

As noted on the podcast itself, we are still working with a slightly touchy Skype connection, my new buzzy headphones, and a willingness to work at improving the sound quality via Levelator and noise removal tools.  If it sounds hinky to you, please let us know--we are still working the bugs out.

And, as always, thanks for listening!

Wait, What? Ep. 30: Slow Burns and Subplots

Photobucket Yes, it's that time again (though I would've had this yesterday for you if I could): Graeme and I are back with Episode 30, and in it we talk about Veronica Mars, the future of slow-burns and subplots, Dave Roman's Astronaut Academy, and of course Mike Friedrich's Justice League of America.  It's brief, it's peppy, and it's been remixed with both Levelator and noise removal tools (because my new headset might be a bit of a dog).  Does it sound better? Worse?  The same?  Let us know!

You can find it on iTunes, or so I'm told, or should you prefer, you can certainly listen to it here:

Wait, What? Ep. 30: Slow Burns and Subplots

As always, we hope you enjoy!

Wait, What? Ep. 29.3: Not A Joiner.

Photobucket The above image really doesn't have as much to do with our final installment of Ep. 29 as I would like, but sweet baby Jesus, do I love it so.  It's going to take a lot of work not for me to dig up a Marcos Martin checklist and start collecting.

That said--yes! The conclusion of Episode 29!  Graeme and I answering your questions and talking until your iPod is blue in its face!  We talk Spider-Man as member of the Future Foundation and possibly X-Men! We talk comic book continuity!  We talk Superman and his role in the DCU! We talk the box office receipts of Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim! And more!  With slightly better grammar, even!

It's on...iTunes?  And it is also here, for you to listen to...or not.  Perhaps you have a school project due, one that requires you to splice in audio of geeky men talking comic books over images of butter being spread on bread and people getting napalmed and Tura Satana kicking someone in the face.  We can help!  (Though you will probably only get a B.)

Wait, What? Ep. 29.3: Not A Joiner.

Thank you for listening and we hope you have enjoyed almost a week's worth of podcasts?  We will try to be a little more sparing in the future, so feel free to portion it out as you wish!
